Avalon, in Cape May County, occupies the northern portion of Seven Mile Beach, a barrier island on the southern Jersey Shore separated from the Cape May mainland by the Intracoastal Waterway. The borough is a well-established summer resort community known for its low-density development, wide beaches, and quieter character compared to busier Shore points to the north. Cape May County is home to one of the most developed craft beverage scenes in New Jersey, particularly in winemaking, with established wineries operating in the county’s interior and along the bay side.

While Avalon itself is primarily residential and seasonal, visitors staying on Seven Mile Beach are within a short drive of the Cape May wine country and the growing cluster of breweries and distilleries based in the Cape May and Rio Grande area. The Garden State Parkway provides direct access from Avalon to venues across the county. Stone Harbor, directly adjacent to Avalon on the same barrier island, rounds out the local beach community, and together they form one of the southern Shore’s primary visitor bases for exploring Cape May County’s craft beverage producers.
