Shamong, in Burlington County, is a rural township in the heart of the New Jersey Pinelands, situated roughly midway between Mount Holly to the northwest and the Atlantic County border to the southeast. The township falls almost entirely within the Pinelands National Reserve, which shapes both its land use and its agricultural character. The sandy, acidic soils of the Pine Barrens support blueberry farming and some vineyard operations, and several farm wineries in the surrounding area make use of that distinctive terroir.
Craft beverage visitors to Shamong are typically making a dedicated trip into the Pinelands rather than a casual stop, given the township’s rural setting and the distances involved from the Philadelphia suburbs or the Shore. Route 206 runs through the township and provides the main access route, connecting Shamong south to Hammonton, one of New Jersey’s most productive agricultural towns and home to several area wineries, and north to Mount Holly and the Burlington County communities along the Delaware River.
